Helly Hansen Ekolab Rapide Soft Shell Jacket – Great Middleweight

If you are an eco conscious buyer the Helly Hansen Ekolab Rapide jacket is one soft shell jacket that you should consider, for starters the fabric of the jacket is made of 47% recycled polyester, 45% virgin polyester and the remaining 8% is spandex. The fabric is also liberally sprayed with a DWR (durable water repellent) which is free of fluorocarbons.
The Ekolab Rapide soft shell sheds snow and drizzle just beads right off the fabric, you shouldn’t have a situation where the fabric gets soaked through. Add the fact that the Helly Hansen Ekolab Rapide is quite wind resistant and with a snug fitting collar it helps keep the heat in.
To assist with preventing heat from getting out and the cold wind from getting in, the Ekolab Rapide features velcro straps on the cuffs, and there is also two front to help keep your hands warm.
The fabric of the Ekolab Rapide is quite breathable, but not great compared to higher priced Gore-Tex or Entrant treated jackets. To get more ventillation for getting moisture away from the body you may have to unzip the front zipper when doing high output activities. To keep the core of your upper body warm the Helly Hansen Ekolab Rapide has a fleece lining which offers quite a bit or insulation for a soft shell.
Overall the Helly Hensen Ekolab Rapide Jacket is a good medium weight Soft Shell jacket that works well in medium cold to much colder (winter) environments. Even in cool spring and autumn evenings in the backcountry this jacket would be a good item to add to the gear list.
