Hike Through Bat Caves At Caprock Canyon Trailway in Texas – State Park

The dusty, barren landscape of the 15,313 acres of Caprock Canyon State Park is so reminiscent Wild West you can almost hear black hat outlaws galloping away after holding up the Denver-to-Fort Worth train. The 64-mile Caprock Canyon Trailway is broken into six sections, each with its own name and trailhead facilities.
Start at the Monk’s Crossing trailhead and heading southwest through mesquite-and-cattle country for 4.5 miles on the Quitaque Canyon Trail toward Clarity Tunnel, a 582-foot portal recently adopted by 50,000 Brazilian free-tailed bats. Every evening from April to October, the bats take to the skies in search of six-legged snacks. Pack plenty of water (the trail’s dry) and bring a headlamp for the return hike-it’s 9 miles out and back-or for exploring the tunnel if you arrive before feeding time.
