Pak-Lite 9-Volt – 2 LED Bright Flashlight 9-Volt Attachment
Friday, March 28th, 2008The Pak-Lite 9-volt flashlight is basically a 2 LED (light emitting diode bulb) encased in plastic that snaps onto the top of a 9-Volt battery and will burn steadily for month long trips. Yes, that is right….months on 1 alkaline 9-Volt battery. The Pak-Lite 9-Volt is available in a variety of brightnesses, flashing options, and even infared or ultraviolet bulbs, prices range from $26 – $30 for these options.
However, the basic model does plenty well, and is bright enough for night time trail use, and you can mount three seperate Pak-Lite 9-Volt light units together on an optional headband if you want hands free lighting. The headband cost about $7.

This superlight piece of camping gear is cool and useful, and would make a good addition to any camp cooking set.

GoLite Virga Ultralight Shell Jacket
Thursday, March 20th, 2008The GoLite Virga jacket is light to say the least. It weighs as much as 2 chocolate bars which is around 8 ounces, now that is light. This jacket has a good fit, and will keep you dry during drizzly weather on the trails. The GoLite Virga has a minimalistic design featuring two big hand pockets, a elaticized hood and a thin waterproof, breathable fabric called Alchemy that has a silkier texture than most hard shells.
The GoLite Virga’s Alchemy fabric however is not as breathable as Gore-Tex or Entrant but then that would raise the cost of this shell jacket significantly. Another negative for this jacket is that the non-adjustable hood tend to blow off your head during a strong gust of wind. However, if you are really counting every ounce of your gear to achieve a light load and you are on a budget then the short-comings of the GoLite Virga ultralight shell jacket are small sacrifices.
